James Garnett is a highly experienced TransforMATive Associate, bringing over 30 years of expertise in digital education, technology leadership and cyber security. He supports schools and Multi-Academy Trusts to strengthen their digital strategies, enhance cyber resilience and develop long-term, financially sustainable approaches to technology. As a facilitator on the TransforMATive Leaders programme, James also shares his insights and experiences to help leaders shape their strategies and deliver transformation with confidence.

James spent more than two decades at United Learning, England’s largest Multi-Academy Trust, where as Director of IT he designed and implemented their digital strategy, oversaw EdTech and IT teams, and led the development of a comprehensive cyber security strategy. He also directed the DfE’s EdTech Demonstrator Programme, supporting over 2,000 schools and colleges to use technology more effectively. In 2024, James founded his own consultancy to provide specialist support to education organisations of all sizes, from interim IT leadership to procurement advice, outsourcing support and mentoring for aspiring IT leaders.

As a TransforMATive Associate, James has conducted numerous cyber security and data protection reviews, embedding his years of experience into practical, actionable recommendations. He also provides additional IT leadership capacity to Trusts undertaking transformational programmes designed in partnership with TransforMATive.

Beyond his consultancy and Associate roles, James is a passionate advocate for technology’s role in improving educational outcomes. He is a founder member of The Digital Futures Group, a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Fellow of the RSA, reflecting his commitment to both technical excellence and the wider societal impact of digital innovation. As Chair of Trustees at Apps for Good, he helps bring free social action, sustainability and AI programmes into schools, inspiring young people by connecting them with professionals across technology and sustainability industries.

James also dedicates his time to the arts as a trustee at Sheffield Theatres, City of Sheffield Theatres and the Montgomery Theatre, where he champions widening participation and engaging young people in creative opportunities.
